Something about Brutalism
Massive, monolithic, blocky, rough, unfinished surfaces and heavy-looking materials are just some of the characteristics to describe brutalist architecture.
Brutalism was the brainchild of Le Corbusier. His grand idea was to be “honest to the materials”, i.e. not to treat, finish, refine or handle them in any way.
We appreciate the large, heavy, ‘ugly’ and raw architecture, and view the grace uniquely. Hideous yet beautiful and futuristic. Unfinished yet complete. The play of layering. The unrefined texture of concrete. The sincerity and integrity. The beauty within the exposed structure. Looking deeper, the rustic edges can be soft and elegant.
